Can weather really cause migraines?
For a subgroup of people with migraine, yes — the evidence supports a real connection, most consistently with falling barometric pressure. But it's not true for everyone, and finding out whether it's true for you takes more than noticing that yesterday was stormy.
What the evidence actually shows
Weather sits near the top of almost every survey of self-reported migraine triggers — the American Migraine Foundation lists it among the most commonly named. Beyond surveys, diary-based studies have found subgroups of patients whose attack frequency rises around specific conditions: drops in barometric pressure (the best-studied factor, with attacks clustering in the hours to two days after a fall), incoming storms, high heat, humidity swings, and strong winds in some regions.
Two honest caveats keep this from being a clean verdict. First, the effects appear in subgroups, not across everyone — plenty of carefully tracked patients show no weather relationship at all. Second, studies that compare patients' beliefs with their own diary data regularly find mismatches in both directions: people convinced they're weather-sensitive whose attacks ignore the barometer, and people who never suspected weather whose attacks track it closely. Population statistics can't settle your individual case.
Why weather is so hard to convict — or acquit — on your own
- Weather never changes alone. A storm day also means dimmer light, pressure and humidity moving together, plans disrupted, maybe worse sleep and skipped meals. Any of those could be the real contributor — or several at once.
- Memory keeps score unfairly. The storm that coincided with a brutal attack is unforgettable; the five storms that passed without incident leave no trace. This is confirmation bias, and everyone has it.
- The lag blurs the picture. Pressure-linked attacks often arrive hours to two days after the change — by which time the sky may be clear, and the connection invisible.
- Triggers stack. Research suggests a weather swing often acts as the last straw on top of short sleep or a stressful week, rather than a standalone cause — so it "works" some weeks and not others.

Stop asking "does weather cause migraines?" and ask "do my attacks cluster around weather changes?" The first question is about populations and stays fuzzy. The second is about you, and a couple of months of honest data can answer it.
How to test yourself
- Log every attack at the time it starts. The timestamp is what lets an attack be lined up against the pressure curve later.
- Capture the conditions with it. Pressure and its trend, temperature, general weather. Nobody transcribes a barometer mid-attack, which is why Dim attaches local weather, temperature, and barometric pressure — including whether it's falling — to every entry automatically.
- Collect ten to fifteen attacks. Below that, clusters are as likely to be luck as pattern.
- Compare. If a clear majority of attacks sit on or just after pressure drops and weather swings, you're probably in the sensitive subgroup. If they're scattered across calm and stormy days alike, you've earned the right to stop watching forecasts with dread — a real win in its own way.
If the answer turns out to be yes
You can't reschedule a cold front, but knowing your sensitivity still changes things: risk days become predictable from the forecast, which argues for guarding sleep, meals, and hydration on those days and keeping whatever your doctor has prescribed within reach, since acute treatment generally works best taken early. And a diary showing weather-linked attacks is concrete evidence to bring to an appointment when discussing prevention — far more persuasive than "I think storms set me off."
