What barometric pressure actually is
Barometric (atmospheric) pressure is the weight of the air above you. It's measured in hectopascals (hPa) and moves with the weather: high-pressure systems bring clear, stable skies, while approaching fronts and storms make pressure fall. Day-to-day swings of 5–15 hPa are normal, and bigger drops come with storms, monsoons and fast-moving fronts.
Why a pressure drop can set off a migraine
The honest answer is that the mechanism isn't fully settled. The leading explanations:
- Sinus and inner-ear pressure imbalance. When outside pressure falls faster than the air inside your sinuses and middle ear can equalize, the small pressure difference may irritate trigeminal nerve endings — the same nerve system involved in migraine pain.
